The History of Finance

The history of finance may start with the history of money itself. As money is used for all sorts of purposes, ancient and medieval civilizations also utilized some basic elements of finance. The 20th century was also a time of qualitative finance theories, starting with Louis Bachelier’s thesis. During this time, a global financial system was formed, and the Federal Reserve began monitoring the U.S. financial system. Despite the growing disconnect between individuals and the world of finance, the function of finance has remained consistent and crucial.

In modern times, the scope of finance has extended to include the allocation of funds, investment decision, and working capital management. A finance professional may also handle project risks, risk profiling, and management. The very word finance comes from the French and is the root word for business. In terms of importance, it encompasses all aspects of business, ranging from start-up, operations, and development to the management of assets and investments. As a result, this field requires a thorough understanding of the economy in general.

As the world of finance becomes more complex, academics continue to improve their understanding of finance and the role it plays in the real world. Though academic advancements have greatly improved day-to-day operations, history shows that the process of finance is far from rational. A history of stock market crashes, for example, illustrates how science cannot explain the human element of fear played a role in the disastrous events of recent years. In such a scenario, academic advancements in finance could help explain these events.
